The weekend kicks off with a Symposium on Saturday, October 12, from 9 – 10 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2961 University Blvd. North. Admission is included in the home tour ticket purchase. The topic is “A Conversation with Ted Pappas,” hosted by author and FSCJ professor Tim Gilmore. In his book, “Box Broken Open: The Architecture of Ted Pappas,” Gilmore explores Pappas’ impact on our city and its architecture. According to Gilmore, Pappas has designed or restored more than 40 buildings throughout Jacksonville.
Symposium guests need not check in at Norman Studios. Check in at the church to receive a ticket and tour materials beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The church will be on the tour all weekend but will not be a check-in site after 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Arlington, Jacksonville’s fastest-growing area after the construction of the Mathews Bridge in 1953, boasts an impressive concentration of Mid-Century Modern architecture. “The annual home tour is an opportunity to showcase the unique structures and beautiful neighborhoods of Arlington, a view people miss if they only see Arlington from the expressway,” said Trish Kapustka, the 2024 Home Tour Chair. “Arlington is one of Jacksonville’s most diverse and historically significant communities. We want guests to spend the day experiencing our neighborhoods, trying the local restaurants, and visiting historic sites along the way.”
